U of A Engineering Students with their Remote Submarine project
On
May 4th, 2004 EDC Chairman Rodger Garner participated as a judge
in the U of A Engineering Design Day competition.
In ten categories of engineering, such as Aerospace, Agricultural,
and Optical Sciences, 73 projects were entered by students of
the University's esteemed engineering department. Mr. Garner was
one of 63 participating judges representing 40 companies in the
area. Winning projects included such ideas as, Photovoltaic Thin
film Adhesion Testing, a cell maintenance chamber for portable
Bio-Sensors, and an Elbow Laxity Tester used to measure the wear
on an athletes arm.
Sponsors of the competition donated over $6, 000 in prize money
as well as contracts to continue work on some of the projects.
Other participating agencies included Lockheed Martin, Ventana,
Raytheon and Texas Instruments. EDC is honored to have been a
part of such an event, and looks forward to more involvement in
expanding the possibilities for budding engineers.

EDC
recently worked with the Engineering Department of Western Star
trucks on a new generation of the Model 123 line of conventional
trucks and tractors for both highway and on/off road applications.
The new designs reduce the total number of parts necessary to
cover the many variations consistent with the customizing options
for which Western Star is known. Through EDC's partnership in
engineering, the product quality of the 123 line was improved
while production costs decreased. Additionally the new designs
retain much of the familiar Western Star characteristics of
rugged looks and functionality. The 123 project follows a similarly
successful pairing with EDC for the Model 109 Western Star trucks
and tractors line.

EDC Takes Part in Innovative Finite Element Technique
|
EDC
recently worked with the Freightliner Engineering Analysis Department
on the generation of the largest Finite Element Models used
at Freightliner. These FE models are for a new bus, code named
B2, to be produced by Thomas Built Buses, a component of the
Freightliner Group at High Point, N.C., in a new, highly automated
plant. The bus body structure has many parts and is built in
various lengths and configurations. The FE models are structured
for rapid change required to analyze many body configurations
to guarantee the structural performance of all the busses in
the new family. The analysis work by EDC and Freightliner will
result in the complete technical description of the structural
dynamics and stresses throughout the body structure.
