EDC Designs Award-Winning Ken Onion "Black Out" Knife

Engineering Design Consultants, Ltd. (EDC), a Portland-based engineering and design firm, has proven it can clearly diversify from transportation engineering to consumer goods. Normally providing design work for such blue chip companies as Freightliner, DaimlerChrysler and Gulfstream, they recently departed from the norm when they took on a project for a hunting knife from a local manufacturer.

New to this arena and given only minor specifications, they were able to come up with the conception, design and production parts in record time. This knife, already a sales sensation, called "The Blackout" which is produced by Kershaw Knife Co. for custom knife designer Ken Onion was recently honored as The Blade Magazine's 1999 Best Buy.

"We're really proud and thrilled to be a part of an award-winning design on our first attempt at this type of project," says EDC's CEO Rodger Garner. "Our mission was to take their (Kershaw's) concept and make it into a reality and it turns out we did this very well." This is the first time Kershaw has sought outside engineering and design assistance for one of their projects. By cutting the normal time-to-production from the usual 8 months to just over 3, reducing their cost target by 25% and increasing Kershaw's manufacturability over 100% proves EDC can more than "cut the metal" for these type of projects.
