Bowflex exercise machine gets re-worked by local companies.

Portland, Oregon (June 2000) Direct Focus, Inc. upgrades components on its popular Bowflex line of fitness equipment, providing consumers with a more attractive and effective product. Searching for ways to improve their product, Bowflex management recognized the need to re-engineer the rod-holder base, a component that holds the power rods.

They contacted Poly-Cast, Inc., an injection-molder based in Tigard, Oregon. Poly-Cast's Marketing/Product Manager, Rick Thomas, enlisted the skills of another local business, Engineering Design Consultants, Ltd. (EDC), a Portland firm noted for its design capabilities and rapid product development "EDC's depth of knowledge in product design and analysis allowed the process of optimizing this component (to be) very easy, resulting in tangible benefits in the final product, says Thomas. "Not only do the parts function better but (they) are more aesthetically pleasing."

Working closely with Poly-Cast and AIMMco, the tool-maker, in Vancouver, Washington, EDC's design team developed a new rod-holder that is much stronger and more aesthetically pleasing. "We (EDC and Poly-Cast) realized that the original material, PVC, was not the optimum choice for the application," stated EDC's CEO Rodger Garner. "When we substituted PC (poly-carbonate), the result was a much stronger product. Also, the product benefits include reduced weight and longer mold life."

EDC is based in Portland, Oregon and provides a full range of engineering and design services to all sectors of the consumer product, electronics, and transportation industry.
